Getting there: From Corrofin take the R476 to Kilfenora for approx. 2½ miles taking a right turn at Kilnaboy immediately before the Church and graveyard. Continue on this road for approx. a further 2½ miles before reaching a cross roads with a green road as the left turn. Turn right here and proceed for approx. ½ mile and park in a convenient spot on the edge of the road. Access to the beginning of the trail is through one of the marked gaps in the wall to the left.
The Walk:The blue Mullagh More loop walk is described on the trail board as ‘very difficult’, has a distance of 5kms and has a walking time of 2½ hours. You are advised to wear appropriate footwear and dress accordingly.
I walked this in February 2009 and found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable walk. For the experienced hill walker or anyone who
is fit and sure footed this walk should not prove to be too difficult. I walked it in 2 hours and this allowed me time to stop and take photographs on route. The ground under foot was not particularly boggy at any point but I would advise firm footwear as the rocky ground can be demanding and if wet can be slippery.
Many examples of coral fossils can be seen in the limestone en route and on reaching the summit of Mullagh More you will be rewarded with fine views across Clare. Particularly fascinating are the unique contours of folding limestone strata of Mullaghmore and neighbouring Slieve Roe and nowhere is this more evident than on the descent from the summit towards Slieve Roe before the trail skirts back round the western side of Mullagh More.
